Earlier today, Microsoft replied to some reports of a purported “Black Screen of Death”, giving a second meaning to the acronym commonly given to the “Blue Screen of Death” error messages that Windows generates upon encountering fatal errors. According to the aforementioned reports, users have recently been encountering a black screen devoid of the taskbar, desktop icons, and pretty much everything to do with Windows Explorer. All that remained on their screens was a solitary “My Computer” explorer window. Affecting all Windows versions ranging from Windows NT 4.0 up to Windows 7, this annoying phenomenon seems to have been triggered by some security updates that were released on Nov. 10, 2009. At the moment, Microsoft has no recommendations as to procedures that can be taken to avoid a friendly encounter from BSOD2.
